I’ve seen the same bad attitudes displayed by so many beginners over time.
Not just in the IM niche, but in almost every walk of life. [nameme ver=”no” tags=”” base64=”yes”]Keep reading until the end for a helpful worksheet[/nameme][nameme ver=”yes” tags=”” base64=”yes”]Keep reading until the end for a helpful worksheet[/nameme]
What bad attitude? I’m not talking about aggression, or anything like that. I’m talking about the damaging power of attitudes like “I could never do that.”, or “I don’t know how to….”.
Those attitudes kill creativity and success. Let’s return the favor and kill those attitudes, ok?
If I may, I’d like to take a moment here to share with you some of the ideas, my beliefs really, that have helped me over the years.
Don’t just chase the money. Seriously. If your only focus is on money, you’re going to be miserable. All the millionaires I have known personally have not been as happy as they could or should! Their money was no insulation against unhappiness. It bought them nicer cars than I’ve ever had. But the money didn’t make them happy.
Sure, if you’re broke and can’t afford to eat every day that’s a miserable existence. But once beyond a certain point money in itself will not make you happier.
So what should you chase, if not the money? Seriously, I would say chase self-actualization. Fancy term. Make yourself happy, first and do what you love that impacts your fellow man in a positive way. The money will follow.
Of course that means you have to do *something*. I’m not suggesting you sit at home and chug beer all day, even if you like doing that.
Have some patience! They say Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither was any business you care to name. Everything takes time, but we all expect immediate gratification.
Commercial interests are *training* you to want it NOW.
- Amazon prime delivery (in the UK you can get deliveries from Amazon in 2 hours for some things!)
On demand television and films
- Yes, we’re all trained that waiting is a bad thing. But in just the same way it takes time, nourishment and careful tending to grow a crop from small seeds, so will your business take time to bring to fruition.
There are lots more examples than those three. I’m sure you’re aware of all the time pressures on you from all sides. Some people camp out in the street to get the latest Apple iPhone the second it’s available! NOW is a powerful influence in your life.
Don’t worry though. If you’re consistent and keep taking one step after another, every day will bring you one step closer to your success. Impatience can cause you to fail before you even begin.
Self-belief. Ah yes, that’s how we started this post.
This is a huge one! If you don’t have self-belief, it doesn’t matter whether you’re capable! Without self-belief you may not even try. If you’ve ever seen Back To The Future you know one of the plot points is Marty McFly’s dad having no self-belief. His life goes downhill. We get to see how that came about in high school.
But then the magic happens. Through time travel, McFly senior gains self-belief and changes his life for the better. By the end of the movie he wins the girl, makes a fortune and becomes a published author.
I know it’s a movie, but the lesson is still there!
He was the same man! The only thing that changed about him was his self-belief. He didn’t suddenly become super intelligent. He just got better at trying things, taking chances and believing it would work out.
I could write an entire book about that concept, but let’s keep it simple.
Unless you are very unusual, you are almost certainly suffering from some limitation in your self-belief. Many of you have told me so. I have the utmost sympathy. I remember a time when I wasn’t sure if I could make a website, make a product, set up a payment system or any of those things.
They were just as hard for me to learn as they are for you. The one thing I had going for me is believing that there is always a solution. Smarter men than me have failed and less smart men have succeeded.
It’s not your smarts that need boosting, I promise you!
If you learned to walk (as a baby!) and you learned to speak (as a child!) and you learned to read and write – you’ve already done things that are much more difficult than anything you wish to achieve. You have it within you, I promise you 100%.
By the way, when we talk about learning to walk do you even remember how many times you fell down? Do you remember how many times you picked yourself up and started all over again?
I don’t. I’m sure you don’t remember, either. But I can tell you exactly how many times it was for both of us.
You and I fell down and got back up…AS MANY TIMES AS IT TOOK TO SUCCEED.
There was never a time, as a baby, that you didn’t believe you would succeed. Self-doubt just wasn’t in your head.
Self-doubt comes later. We learn it as we go through life and hit negative influences.
First website doesn’t quite work? Scrap it and start again.
First product didn’t sell? Learn from it and make another one.
Get up at least one more time than you fall down. Think about that. Seriously, think about that and let it sink in.
Get up at least one more time than you fall down.
If you tell yourself there is no solution, your brain will believe you. If you tell yourself that there is a solution, your brain will believe you. Finding the solution may take time and effort. But none of that is worth anything unless and until you trust enough to start making the effort. And you can’t make that effort if you truly believe it’s a waste of time.
Believing in yourself is justified by everything that you’ve already accomplished in your life. If you’re like most people, you’re just not used to thinking in those terms.
When you fall down (when, not if) there is only one person on this entire planet who can keep you down. One person out of 7 billion people has that kind of power over you.
Yes, it’s you. You’re the only one who can keep yourself down.
Work smarter, not harder, is another lovely saying. But so many people forget that you still have to do some work! So getting up after you fall is great. But you can’t just stand there. You have to do something. Sometimes, though you can save a lot of work by spending a bit more time thinking things through first. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. Don’t look for the complex until you’ve exhausted the simple.
I make great use of that myself. I know there’s a “simplest” way for anything. So I look for that simplest way. I start out expecting to find it. Some simple solutions are harder than others, sure. But again we tend to overcomplicate things. Ever heard the acronym K.I.S.S.?
KISS – Keep It Strictly Simple (the original says Keep It Simple, Stupid, but that’s not very nice, is it?)
